BDSM interviews: Adara Wolf

Adara Wolf enjoys dark themes. Will you dare to take a peek into this darkness? 😉

What do you want readers to know about you and your books?

This is a tough one! Of course my “brand” is dark, m/m works with a lot of kink content. So, if dark and taboo and maybe-not-entirely consensual are your thing, definitely check my works out.
Beyond that, I want to share how much I enjoy crafting these worlds. Naturally the main point is the central relationship, but I also love to build worlds and I spend a lot of time developing the setting that allows the characters to exist as they do.

I came across a few discussions on whether master/slave stories should be considered BDSM or a separate genre. What do you think? Would it be accurate to call Under His Heel BDSM?

Clearly what’s happening in Under His Heel is not SSC or RACK; it’s a dark fantasy that’s fun to explore in fiction. But I think there’s a lot of overlap between people who like to read about BDSM and people who like to read master/slave stories—I know I personally enjoy both types of stories! So I wouldn’t call it a realistic, or ideal “real world” BDSM story, but it is a dark, fantasy version of it. That said… Under His Heel is certainly also a master/slave story!

Is it more appealing for you to write from the POV of a sadist or the one who is at his mercy? Why?

Usually from the POV of the person who’s at his mercy! I find it easier to describe their emotions, and honestly, I find writing the fear and humiliation very hot. But I’ve written both POVs, and I’ll use whichever perspective is most appropriate for the story as a whole.

What do you find interesting about writing humiliation scenes?

Honestly, it’s just very hot to me. I’m willing to be sold on any kink if it’s got humiliation attached to it. So while, for example, crossdressing doesn’t do much for me on its own, forced feminization + humiliation is very, very relevant to my interests. There’s just something about a character being utterly humiliated, red in the face and wishing they could control anything about their current situation…

What is the most challenging kink scene you’ve written?

Strangely, it’s any mind control scene. I love mind control as a kink—it’s in my top three—but because I enjoy it so much, I end up feeling that all my attempts to write it are inadequate. Going back to it at a later time to re-read helps a bit since I have more distance and can judge it a bit more objectively.
Second to mind control… I’m actually very squeamish! So writing about a brutal whipping scene, or anything involving extreme piercings, I start to get a bit uncomfortable. I try to research things that aren’t quite my bag to make sure I’m getting things right (and somewhat feasible), but even that got my stomach turning sometimes. The things I do in the name of “art”, lol!
